About the Zion Historical Society
Founded in 1967 by Wesley Ashland, a prominent jeweler in Zion, the Zion Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of Zion, Illinois. Governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors and supported by a passionate general membership, our organization is committed to protecting and sharing the heritage of our community.
At the heart of our mission is the preservation of Shiloh House, the historic home of Zion’s founder, Dr. John Alexander Dowie. This iconic residence houses a museum featuring a growing collection of artifacts, photographs, and personal belongings of Dr. and Mrs. Dowie, offering a unique glimpse into Zion’s past. Thanks to generous donations from residents, both past and present, we continue to expand our collection, ensuring Zion’s history remains alive for future generations.
The Zion Historical Society is headquartered in Shiloh House, where our Board of Directors meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. We welcome the public to attend, participate, and explore our treasured collections.
